Research Triangle Institute, now know as RTI International, was created in 1958 from the vision of the government, industry and academic leadership of North Carolina to develop the intellectual capital of the state. RTI is an independent, noprofit, 501 (c) (3) corporation with a distinguished history in scientific research and technology development. The firm, headquartered in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, employs a worldwide staff of more than 2,200 with more than $500 million in revenue in 2004.
MCNC (formerly the Microelectronics Center of North Carolina) was created in 1980 by the North Carolina General Assembly to promote economic development in North Carolina through creating scientific and technology jobs. Beginning in the late 1990′s, MCNC successfully commercialized four companies. The research divisions being acquired by RTI include the Signal Electronics Division, Materials and Electronic Technologies Division and Advance Network Research Division.
